Samsung is gearing up to manufacture foldable displays for iPhones and MacBooks

Samsung Display is reported to have undergone a major reorganization in preparation for manufacturing foldable displays for iPhones, iPads and MacBooks.

According to The Elec, Samsung Display’s restructuring has primarily strengthened the operations of its business group, with a focus on meeting demand for flexible displays from Apple. This group has been prioritized to help make foldable devices more mainstream in the future.

The revenue and profits of Samsung Display’s smartphone division come mainly from its OLED display business. Aside from its flagship Galaxy products, iPhones are a major source of earnings for the company.

Samsung Display is currently leading the foldable display market as it has exclusively supplied the foldable panels for the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip since 2019. This latest restructuring also aims to prevent rivals from capturing market share. LG Display is rumored to be involved in Apple’s foldable projects as well, including supplying a 20.25-inch panel.

According to Apple Insider, rumors of Apple secretly developing a “iPhone Fold” have been circulating for some time, and some of Apple’s partners in South Korea may soon receive orders to manufacture related components.

Although a folding iPhone has garnered much public attention, it may not be the company’s first foldable product. Analyst Ming-chi Kuo said Apple has planned to first launch foldable displays on the iPad and MacBook Pro, expected to debut in 2024 or 2025. Meanwhile according to The Elec back in June, Samsung Display CEO Baek Seung In revealed at a company event in Korea that durability issues with foldable displays for MacBooks has led Apple to adjust its product launch timeline.

Experts assess that after launching its 5th generation Galaxy Fold, Samsung Display has gained much experience manufacturing foldable devices. This latest reorganization demonstrates that the company is prioritizing the development of new technologies, ensuring it can meet customer demand and maintain its leading position in the display market.
